The Rainbow – A Sign of Covenant

One day, I was reading some of the email responses from an Elijah List publication. As I read them, one statement from a reader caught my attention. She shared how she prayed, “God let there be a rainbow after this storm.”

I began to think about this statement.

The rainbow only comes after the storm, not before, after. I have thought about this before, yet today it captured my attention once again.

Genesis 9:8-16 says, “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. Thus, I establish My covenant with you:

Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

The rainbow is a sign of the establishment of God’s covenant with us and with every living creature. I never look at a rainbow without remembering God’s covenant with me. And the most amazing thing is that HE never looks at a rainbow without remembering His covenant with each of us.

These signs of His covenant come after storms.

We all go through storms, no one is exempt. I have gone through a few storms in my life, yet His covenant has remained intact.

Some storms come without warning.

We may be doing everything right. Walking in complete faithfulness to God and His word – yet a storm approaches. Why?

The enemy sees a person who is following God with their whole heart and sets out to destroy them or to get them to let go of God’s promises.

There have been times when God did not deliver me out of the storms, but there was never a time when He didn’t walk with me through it. There was never a storm that He didn’t bring me out of, to the other side.

Romans 8:18 says, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

I love Psalm 66:8-12, it says, “Oh, bless our God, you peoples! and make the voice of His praise to be heard, who keeps our soul among the living, and does not allow our feet to be moved. For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us as silver is refined. You brought us into the net; You laid affliction on our backs. You have caused men to ride over our heads; We went through fire and through water; but You brought us out to rich fulfillment.”

Yes, we may go through the fire and the water, but He will bring us out. He may allow us to be refined…but He will bring us out. We may feel caught in a net at times…but He will bring us out. His faithfulness always brings us out.

Deuteronomy 7:9, “Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.”

Friends, He is a faithful God who keeps His covenant. I don’t know what kind of storm you find yourself in today but this I do know, He is faithful, if He said it, He will do it.

Today my prayer for you is this; May there be a rainbow after your storm – a double rainbow – filled with the blessings of the covenant of your God.
