A couple weeks ago we sent out an email inviting our readers to check out the new things on our website. Since that day I have had several emails asking me to explain what a mezuzah is and what it means, I would like to take the time to do that today.
In Hebrew mezuzah actually means “doorpost.” The mezuzah as it is known is actually piece of parchment, called a klaf, with specific verses from the Torah that often is then placed inside a mezuzah case, which is then affixed to the doorposts of home.
The scriptures inside the mezuzah are found in the book of Deuteronomy. These scriptures are written on a parchment paper and placed inside or on a mezuzah.
Written on the parchment are 713 words from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21.
Shema Yisrael (Hear, O Israel): The Lord is our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord, your God, with all of your heart, and with all of your soul, and with all of your means. And these words, which I command you this day, should be upon your heart. And you shall teach them to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your home and when you walk on your way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be a sign between your eyes. And you shall inscribe them upon the doorposts of your home and upon your gates (Deut. 6:4-9).
The final verse on a mezuzah is also found in Deut. 11:20-21: And you shall inscribe them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates, in order that your days and the days of your children shall increase, on the land with the Lord swore to your forefathers to give to them, as the days of heaven above the earth.
From this, then, we mark our homes in a physical, visual way, for me, as a symbol of my faith in God’s word. That is the meaning and symbolism of a mezuzah.
Now, I know I am not Jewish, but I am kingdom minded. I enjoy the symbolism of God. And I choose to practice these as God leads me to. I love having the word of God all over my house. And I love that God says in Deuteronomy “you shall inscribe them upon the doorposts of your home and upon your gates in order that your days and the days of your children shall increase.” Therefore, by faith, I place a mezuzah on my doorpost and each time I look at it I am reminded of God’s promise to me and my children.
I also believe God is reminded of my faith in His word and His promise when He sees the mezuzah on my doorpost.
On a final note, according to Jewish customs, you place the mezuzah on the right side of the doorpost of the main door and any other door in your house, except for the bathroom. I only have one and it is on my main door. It is a reminder of God’s word and His promises to me.
