As we transition from the warmth of Thanksgiving festivities, we find ourselves approaching the joyous season of Christmas, a time when we come together to honor the miraculous birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Despite the distractions that often cloud our thoughts—such as the pressures of work, the shadow of illness, and the myriad fears that seem to permeate our society—this season remains a profound opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the love and hope Christ brings into our lives. It’s a moment to pause and embrace the true spirit of the holiday, allowing faith to shine brightly amidst the chaos.
As I sat in contemplation today, a profound realization washed over me. I’ve shared this before, but it struck me anew: a unique grace empowers me to navigate this challenging season. It’s not just a grace that allows me to endure and survive; instead, it’s a vibrant grace that invites me to walk through it with profound joy in the Lord, enabling me to truly thrive.
Like many of you, I’ve faced some harsh blows lately. It would be easy to succumb to feelings of despair and defeat, yet strangely, I do not. Instead, I feel enveloped in God’s grace, and surprisingly, I am filled with joy.
This joy took me off guard. When it dawned on me that I was experiencing true joy, I felt like a little child discovering something wondrous. Jesus said to come to him as a child. That’s precisely how it feels right now.
Children are remarkable beings. They embody resilience in the face of adversity, and more often than not, they radiate joy and laughter, seemingly bouncing through life with an innocent exuberance. It’s a refreshing reminder of the beauty of embracing joy amidst life’s chaos.
My little Brailee can go from a frown to a fit of giggles in the blink of an eye. It’s truly remarkable to witness her emotions shift so effortlessly, reminding me how adults often overlook the simple joys in life. Watching her, I can’t help but think that we adults could learn a lot from their carefree approach to happiness.
Another observation I’ve made about children is just how easily they find joy in the world around them. A single butterfly fluttering by, the sound of laughter from a friend, or even a simple game can ignite pure delight in them. It’s inspiring to see that it doesn’t take much to make them smile; every little moment is an opportunity for happiness.
Earlier this week, I made a quick stop at Hobby Lobby and chose a little something special for Brailee. It wasn’t anything extravagant—just a small trinket—but the reaction it evoked was nothing short of astonishing. When I handed it to her, her eyes lit up with excitement. She leaped into the air, her voice bubbling over with joy as she exclaimed, “It feels like an early Christmas!” The sheer delight radiating from her was contagious, filling the room with warmth and happiness. It made me pause to reflect: Why don’t we all embrace such joy in our lives?
Indeed, the world is filled with an array of bewildering events. Some days, it feels as though sanity has slipped through the fingers of many. We face numerous challenges that test our resilience, encounter hindrances that block our paths and experience deep-seated needs that often go unfulfilled. Amidst all this turmoil, how can we possibly find joy?
The answer is simple and profound. Our joy does not stem from this world; rather, it is rooted in something greater. True joy flows from a deep and abiding relationship with the Lord, who provides peace and fulfillment that transcends our circumstances.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. (Gal 5:22)
Joy is a profound fruit of the Spirit, emerging from the Holy Spirit within us. It doesn’t rely on external circumstances or blessings; rather, it is an inner experience we can choose to embrace. True joy invites us to connect with this deep wellspring, fostering a lasting sense of peace and happiness that transcends our immediate situations.
We can also pray for a filling of joy, as stated in Romans 15:13.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Dear friends, I may not know the challenges you are confronting today, nor the burdens you are carrying on your journey. However, I want to share a profound truth with you: joy resides within you. It is a vibrant and resilient force waiting to be discovered. Take a moment to awaken it—embrace it wholeheartedly. Make a resolute choice, a commitment to not only seek out joy in your life but to radiate that joy wherever you travel. Let it be a joy that is so deep and rich, it feels unspeakable, bursting forth with abundant glory. That is God’
