The other day I read a story that I absolutely loved! It is so insightful. I had to share it with you today. Although this story is about horses and riders – I believe it applies to every part of life.
Have you ever looked at someone and said, “I wish I could do that?” Or, “I could never do that?” If so, this story is for you. For me personally, I have often looked at other ministers and thought, “Wow, they are so anointed, I wish I was like they are.”
After reading this story, I gained a different perspective. Instead of believing I couldn’t have that same walk, I realized, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. If I want a more anointed walk with God, it is just as available to me as the next person, regardless of who they are – it is up to me. I won’t watch them and wonder why I can’t – I will see them with new eyes and know that I can. I hope this story blesses you as it did me.
Tonight, one of my students got frustrated watching me ride her horse.
Through tears, she told me it was hard to watch me get on and figure things out so quickly when she couldn’t understand why she couldn’t do the same thing.
I told her she was looking at it all wrong.
Don’t watch me and wonder why you can’t.
Watch me and realize that you can.
If I can do it, that means it can be done. If your horse can do it, that means he’s capable. And if both of those things are true, then you can learn to do it too.
And somewhere in saying that to her, I realized how many years I spent doing the exact same thing.
Watching people who were better than me or doing more than me and wondering “Why can’t I do that? Why am I not there yet?”
I let other people’s ability become evidence of my inability instead of evidence of what was possible.
Maybe the people ahead of us aren’t there to remind us how far behind we are.
Maybe they’re there to show us where we can go.
I love this last part. Maybe the people ahead of us aren’t there to remind us how far behind we are, maybe they are there to show us where we can go.
God always puts people in our lives to encourage us to reach higher, to live closer to Him. To compel us to dig a little deeper. To learn more. To experience more. To be better at our job or whatever we are doing in life.
Let’s begin to see the people in our lives as encouragers instead of feeling less than.
I have several friends in my life that show me I can do things differently. I can love better. I can forgive easier. I can reach higher. If you stop and think about it, I would imagine you have friends like that as well.
And, let’s be aware that others are watching us. Coming up behind us. Looking for examples. There are people who wish they could attain what you have attained. Encourage them. Show them the way. Be their example. I love the scripture that says, “Follow me as I follow Christ.” Let that always be our prayer. Follow me and I follow my Lord.
